En 2007, Alain Mabanckou publiait Lettre à Jimmy, à l’occasion du vingtième anniversaire de la mort de James Baldwin. Sous le mode d’une conversation fictive avec l’écrivain afro-américain, l’auteur remonte le fil de ses propres années en France et aux Etats-Unis. De même, Le Sanglot de l’homme noir (2012) unit les fils de l’essai et de la fiction pour aborder des questions sociales et politiques autour de la place de l’homme noir en France. Pour sa part, Sami Tchak, dans Pagli, Soupir, Filles de Mexico, Al Capone le Malien (2011) intègre par un jeu d’intertextualités et de lectures critiques littéraires un regard sur d’autres auteurs, africains mais aussi latino-américains et renvoyant, de manière plus large, à la littérature mondiale. Dernièrement, La couleur de l’écrivain (2014) joue sur une performativité des salons littéraires et tables rondes pour revenir sur les grands tenants de la production littéraire africaine. A partir de ces deux auteurs, et de Boubacar Boris Diop et Leonora Miano, Odile Cazenave examine plus avant les innovations littéraires qui passent par ces allées et venues entre fiction et essai, entre romancier et essayiste, surtout lorsqu’ils ne se déclarent pas comme tels.

Please join us for our induction ceremony that will include an artistic and literary performance by the Cercle français and a visit from the Northeast Vice President, Dr. Eileen Angelini. Pi Delta Phi is comprised of students that have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement in French.

In honor of the Semaine de la francophonie, the Department of French and Francophone Studies invites you to attend the French and Francophone Studies Majors and Minors event! Please join us for a get-together where you can learn about the many opportunities for the study of French at Penn State and beyond. Speakers will present the various French majors, the French minor, and study abroad opportunities in French-speaking countries. Speakers will also highlight the exciting careers our alumni are pursuing. Light refreshments will be served.
